How best to use NYC public data?

    August 22, 2009
    12:00 pmto5:00 pm

Interesting things are happening in the for the moment tech world of NYC’s public data.  I’ll just paste the email Noel sent to the NYC Open Gov list…

Announcing a new Meetup for Open Government NYC!

    What: BigAppsDevCamp #2

    When: August 22, 2009 12:00 PM

    Where:
The Change You Want to See
    84 Havemeyer st
    Williamsburg, NY 11211

    BigAppsDevCamp

    * Does your next app need municipal data?
    * Do have a mobile app that will change the way New Yorkers navigate though the city?
    * Do you want to become a vendor for NYC?
    * Are you ready to help NYC join the 21st Century?

If you answer is yes to any one of those questions, you MUST attend BigAppsDevCamp.

Believe it or not, New York City is in the process of opening a bunch of data set so we can develop Web apps, iPhone/Android/Mobile apps, and other amazing things! BUT before they open any data, we have to respond to an “RFEI”–in other words, tell them what and how we are going to use their data. The deadline is September 1, just a week and a half away!

This Saturday (8/22), members of the OpenGov NYC meetup < http://bk.ly/mU > will be hosting a workshop to help you navigate this complex process. Come this Saturday to plug into the following…

    * Why the city is RFPI’ing this process and how to format your proposal.
    * How you can make money by coordinating future Big Apps campaigns.
    * Brainstorm ideas for apps with other developers and city dwellers.
    * How your app can change the city.

If you can’t attend this and still want to participate, add your idea to Apps for Democracy’s NYC BIG APPS Ideas board < http://bk.ly/mP > or help us promote via twitter and the #BigApps hashtag. A raw data dump of the NYC Big Apps Ideas content can be downloaded here. < http://barcamp.org/f/uservoice-ideas-bigapps.xls >

Saturday, 22 Aug from Noon to 5 pm.

The Change You Want to See, 84 Havemeyer St, Brooklyn, RSVP at < http://barcamp.org/BigAppsDevCamp >.

If you have any questions, please reach out to one of the two organizers.

[Noel Hidalgo and Matthew Burton’s contact info is likely available elsewhere online, but if you can’t find it just get in touch.]

I couldn’t resist posting a perhaps not entirely appropriate suggestion.

For a notion of a few of the many things that might be done with public municipal data check out some of the apps that came out of a contest in DC.  For a great general repository of neato APIs and mashups, poke around programmable web.

    Demos Panel on Ballot Initiatives

    July 22, 2009
    5:00 pmto7:00 pm

Demos is hosting a potentially interesting discussion on the 22nd.  Halfway informed events  on initiative and referendum processes are uncommon in not so democratic New York, so this will be a rare treat.

Thanks to Tom Lowenhaupt of the real .nyc effort (not the take-the-money-and-run imitation) for passing it along!

    Participation Camp

    June 27, 2009toJune 28, 2009

Another promising local unconference!  The scheduling looks pretty loose right now, so check their site as plans solidify.

    Hyperpolis

    October 16, 2009 10:00 amtoOctober 17, 2009 3:00 pm

Titled Augmented Participation, this October’s conference promises to cover some very relevant ground. (And its right here in town!)

Also: check out this local open government Meetup group.
